Sony TC-K555 3-Head Cassette Deck Tape Recorder Vintage Audio Japan Tested

Offered is a vintage Sony TC-K555 dual capstan motor/ 3-head Cassette Tape Deck from the late 1980s with mild wear. This unit currently works well and has had a basic cleaning and service. One of the two fuse lamps i. TAPE was burned out and so it has been replaced. The back lighting lamp in the cassette housing also burned out (the lamp is dual purpose and is also used to illuminated the photodiode which signifies tape motion) and so this has been replaced with a modern LED equivalent. The heads and capstan assembly has been lightly cleaned and demagnetized. The capstan bearings were lubricated (with high grade synthetic bearing oil). The transport (forward, reverse, play/record) was tested; it works nicely. The heads still record/play perfectly at 18kHz (using a function generator with playback output to a digital scope). When tested with a frequency calibration tape the playback was spot on. The azimuth was slightly adjusted. Everything tested appears to behave properly. Issue noted in testing: When recording the source signal output is about twice that of the tape output and so that the observed sound level drops when switching from SOURCE to TAPE (with or without bias adjustments and/or Dolby B/C). Cosmetically the unit is in very good but not perfect condition. There is one noticeable scratch on the top cover (hard to see in the photo) and one small scratch on the front face i. Record mute button and on the clear plastic tape transport cover. The felt pads on the feet have partially worn off but there is still padding. 3-head, single compact cassette deck. Tape Speed: 4.8 cm/s. Erase, Record, Playback Heads. Record/Playback Type I, FeCr, CrO2, Metal Tape. Dolby B and C. 20Hz to 19kHz Frequency Response (Metal tape). 73dB (dolby C) Signal to Noise Ratio. 0.04% Wow and Flutter. 0.8% Total Harmonic Distortion. Input: 77.5mV (line). Output: 0.435V (line). Dimensions: 17 x 4 x 11 1/4 = 430 x 105 x 285mm. Weight: 6.1kg = 13.5lb.
