Really unusual little Westinghouse tape recorder from the 1960s. This is the H29R1, Westinghouse’s version of the Sanyo Micro-Pack 35. It uses a proprietary tape cartridge with two reels stacked on top of each other and was one of the early attempts at making a truly pocket-sized tape recorder before compact cassettes took over. This one is tested and working. It plays and the mechanism operates. Includes the recorder, original-style fitted leather carrying case, and one Westinghouse Micro-Pack recording tape/cartridge as pictured. These cartridges seem to be considerably harder to find than the recorders themselves. The recorder is in very nice presentable vintage condition for its age. There is normal age-related wear, small marks and some oxidation/discoloration. The leather case also shows its age. I have intentionally not tried to aggressively clean or restore anything. The tape currently in the cartridge has not been erased or recorded over by me. I don’t know its history or what may be recorded on it, so I’m leaving it exactly as found. A really neat piece of early portable recording history and a strange format that didn’t last long. Great for a vintage audio collection, obsolete-media collection, display, or someone interested in unusual recording formats.
