On this one, there are stickers with inscriptions on the packaging, there are inscriptions on the cassettes stickers and one the cassettes has no sticker (see 6th and 12th pictures). The Sony Elcaset was an audio cassette format introduced in 1976 that was designed to provide the high audio quality of open-reel tape recorders with the ease of use of compact cassettes. It used a wider tape that was driven at a higher speed, allowing for better frequency response and lower noise than compact cassettes. While it provided improved sound quality, it was more expensive and saw limited commercial success before Sony dumped remaining stock in Finland in the late 1970s. A sweet Sony EL-5 Elcaset deck from the 70s. Matches the famous V-FET series of amps. Elcaset was a technically superior format Sony, Teac and Panasonic developed as a higher quality compact cassette format. Like Betamax, it never took off but remains a historical curiosity. I don’t have any Elcasets so I haven’t tested it properly. I can verify that the meters light up and the transport buttons work. You are looking at a super clean “Fully Functional” Sony EL-7 ELcaset tape deck. Record, playback, source, tape, pause, stop, fast-forward, rewind, Dolby, recording level line input, recording level main control… The tape counter works and both VU meters light up and the needles move smoothly. I couldn’t sense any belt slippage or hesitation at startup or the end of a full speed rewind. I do not own a mic, so that input and control is untested. Overall condition is excellent, no wear, scratches, dents or corrosion. There is the slightest nick in the top of the aluminum faceplate… You can feel it more that see it. I did not take the sides or outer cover off to inspect the interior, but I cannot see any dust balls or corrosion through the vent holes. The input level knob on the rear potentiometer is missing, but the level adjust works. Overall I would rate this unit at 9.5 out of 10. Also included is one tape shown in the pictures. This unit comes from a house-hold full of Marantz and Sansui high end equipment. The previous owner maintained all his own equipment and I wouldn’t be surprised if it has been reconditioned recently. This has happened to me more than once, and eBays answer to me is to file a police report? So, thats the reason for the policy change. I will always state the real condition of the item to the best of my ability.
