Vintage Superscope CRS-2200 Stereo Cassette Recorder (2). Designed by Marantz U. Produced in Taiwan. Beautiful and hard-to-find Superscope CRS-2200 portable stereo system from the late 1970s. Superscope was owned by Marantz during this period, making this a desirable vintage piece for collectors. Radio works properly. Cassette player is NOT working. I do not have the skills or equipment to perform further technical testing. Cassette deck door does not consistently close/latch – sometimes it closes properly, sometimes it does not. Cosmetically very clean for its age with normal minor signs of use. Please review all photos carefully as they are part of the description. Original Owner’s Manual. Superscope CS-200S Cassette Tape Recorder Deck Boombox Vintage

High quality stereo cassette player and recorder, this model was top of Supercope’s range, launched in 1974 and available for some years. Designed in USA and manufactured in Japan. Superscope were known for their rock-solid, incredibly well built Hi-Fi products. The fact that this unit still functions over 45 years later is testament to that. These were popular at the time for recording live performances as they were one of the only battery powered portable products that recorded in stereo. This is a precursor to the boombox that became so iconic of the 1980s- a portable, mains or battery powered stereo unit with speakers that could be taken and used anywhere. It can be powered by 240V mains (mains cable included in sale), 4 x C batteries, 6 V DC power adapter (a genuine accessory was available for this to allow it to be powered from a car cigar lighter socket- this isn’t included in this sale, but a suitable unit should be easy to source), or rechargeable battery which recharges while the unit is running on the mains. This unit is in amazing overall condition, it is complete with no missing buttons or switches and is fully operational. It doesn’t look like it has been used much and seems to have been kept in its case most of its life so that it’s mostly dust free. There are some minor marks on the unit if you look closely, but they do not detract from the quality appearance. It has been tested with a number of cassettes. It plays well on good quality tapes. It does struggle (sounds somewhat wobbly) with some low quality tapes, I’m not sure why, but maybe it could benefit from a service. The battery compartment is completely clean, as is the tape deck, which has had its heads and pinch roller cleaned. The external speakers function perfectly and sound decent for a unit of this age. They each have a long lead which can be coiled around the special holder inside the rear of each speaker to adjust their length. The internal speaker also functions as intended. The original, Superscope branded, vinyl carrying case has metal zips and is in good condition with no tears or anything more than very minor abrasions. There is an elasticated velvet pouch/pocket inside the lid for storage of cables and other accessories. Includes the original owner’s user manual and a supplemental manual for the rechargeable battery. Note: The rechargeable battery does not work. I have included it as it would likely be a fairly inexpensive job to have someone replace the cells inside the case. They are NiCad cells, so should be fairly easy to source. The main unit charges the battery, so there is no separate battery charger required. There are battery repair specialists around the country who rebuild far more complicated battery packs for things like electric bikes- this would be a simple job for them.
