Vintage Akai MG614 professional 4 Track cassette tape recorder with 6 channel mixer and two professional microphone preamps. This is it, the best cassette tape based multi-track recorder ever made, hands down. Akai built these in the same era as the MPC-60 Pete Rock used one to record his SP1200 beats circa the Pete Rock & CL Smooth. Mecca and the Soul Brother. People often like to say a piece of gear is “built like a tank” – this is the only hardware I have ever really felt that way about, steel case, steel chassis, steel shielding – it even has an upholstered wrist rest! I recorded an album on this machine and was really pleased with the sound! I’ll throw in a studio grade blank tape to get you started. I especially like the parametric EQ for each channel, VERY dramatic sound sculpting possible, or keep it transparent if that is your thing. Pitch control and “Low/High” speed tape speed settings for lo-fi beat making, Memory slots for quick cueing and auto repeat with punch in. DBX noise processor built in. Seriously, this is the most engineered and professional cassette four track ever made. This unit does need a repair! As I was taking pics for this listing (you can see it playing back a four track cassette in the pics) I heard a twang sound like a rubber band snapping and the machine would no longer eject or playback tapes. I took off the bottom plate and sure enough there was the cam motor belt snapped (see pic). This repair requires a small rubber belt (Akai part number MB-336021, see pic of service manual for item 3-21) to be installed in the cassette deck assembly. I can confirm that the deck was operational and sounding great before the belt snapped a few hours ago (probably because I hadn’t used the machine in the last year and the belt got stiff). It has also some dings and general wear and tear for a 35 year old piece of gear. There is a ding in the metal above the cassette deck, no impact on function. The pan potentiometer for channel 6 is bent – still has full range of motion, and maybe you can bend it back, but I just left it panned to the middle. Button cap for “Track Monitor” channel is missing, button still works fine, just the cap is missing. Cassette deck door is missing, it was removed by previous owner because apparently he liked to swap tapes all the time and thought the door was in the way. Again, does not affect function of the deck, but I always kept a dust cover over the machine when it wasn’t in use anyway. I tested all the features I was able to. Sliders and pots all sounded quiet. Jacks and buttons, memory and indicators all operating as expected. I demagnetized the head when I bought this a few years ago, and put about 20 more hours on the record head, so I don’t think it needs it again, but I leave that up to you. I don’t have any SMPTE equipment, so I couldn’t test the “Tape Sync” output, but no reason to assume it isn’t up to same functional standard that the rest of the deck is. I will bubble wrap and pack carefully as this machine can give you years of service.
